The Trend Report: SS21
Back in what feels like a lifetime ago, the fashion industry witnessed a fashion week like none other, blending IRL and URL to present SS21’s collections. Nevertheless, our designers didn’t disappoint, bringing us a series of standout trends to celebrate the prevailing power of creativity and innovation, even in the midst of difficult times. Now these runway-ready pieces are starting to arrive, it’s time to get a refresher on what to look forward to in the season to come and how to get ahead of the trends - whatever phygital occasion you may be attending.
Mood-Boosting Brights
It takes a lot to stand out at fashion week, especially when you add in the extra challenge of capturing your audience’s attention through a screen. Nevertheless, the SS21 season showed us that our designers are masters of artful attention seeking, choosing a colour palette of mouth-watering brights that had audiences agape like kids in a candy shop. Capturing the spirit of the green-eyed monster, Bottega Veneta, Kwaidan Editions and Molly Goddard showcased envy-inspiring emeralds, whilst Valentino, Stella McCartney and Acne Studios’ colour palettes were quite literally one of the highlights of the season.
Bringing Sexy Back
As if as an antithesis to the practical magic of the loungewear we’ve been living in, many designers decided to help us reconnect with our sensual side. Unsurprisingly, Fashion East was the purveyor of the best partywear, with current and former designers such as Supriya Lele and Maximilian bringing the heat with their seductive, cutaway designs. Joining them, of course, was Donatella Versace, whose designs were worn by models made up to appear as though they’d just stepped out of a sweaty, sexy tropical club night. Ah, we can but dream of the days.
Denim For Days
Despite these fantasies, the SS21 shows were replete with pragmatic outfit solutions - as demonstrated by the proliferation of denim on the runways. These weren’t just your average jeans, however, rather designers such as GANNI, Marine Serre and Alexander McQueen showed us that a canadian tuxedo looks rather different in the hands of the world’s finest creative minds.
WFH Wardrobe
Bringing home the balance between fantasy and reality, some designers decided to embrace the spirit of lockdown by elevating our slouchy sweatsuits to runway-worthy fits. Balenciaga, Miu Miu and Celine mastered luxurious loungewear, whilst purveyor of stylish staples Christine Centenera brought us exactly those with her latest WARDROBE.NYC collection.
Minimalism
Speaking of home, it seems that Marie Kondo-mania has had ripple effects beyond it’s 2019 Netflix heyday, with the runways also showcasing a deliciously essentialist range of sleek and simple staples to capture the life-changing magic of dressing up. Encouraging us to buy less but buy better, names such as Prada, Khaite, Lemaire and Jil Sander all delivered a vision of versatile minimalism that couldn’t be better suited to our ever-changing wardrobe needs.
