The Trend Report: SS21

Despite a tumultuous year, for the SS21 season our designers didn’t disappoint, bringing us a series of standout trends to celebrate the prevailing power of creativity and innovation as an antidote to difficult times. Whilst you no doubt got the digest from our A-Z fashion week roundup, it’s time to get a refresher on the hottest trends to wear now - whether it’s an IRL or a URL occasion you’re attending. 70s Sports Club

Polo shirts, zip up jerseys and a retro feel - this season’s offering delivered the comfort of WFH dressing with a suitably stylish twist, one pulled right from the annals of 70s nostalgia and its associated styling tips. Get your hands on tonal polos from Bottega Veneta and Jacquemus, or get into the spirit of borrowed-from-dad bombers with Balenciaga.

Into The Wild

Whilst many of us profess to finding peace in nature, it was the SS21 season that showed us that The Great Outdoors is also a great place to look for style inspiration (and not just because we ended up spending so much time there). Master of conceptual cool Craig Green showed a colour palette of rich khaki across his signature padded styles, whilst designers such as Paria Farzaneh, Sacai and Givenchy’s new Creative Director Matthew Williams showed a similarly leafy palette of colours and textures. Over at Burberry, models even emerged directly from the forest floor.

Pastel Perfection

If 2020 taught us to go softly on ourselves, it shows in the colour palette of the SS21 collections, where dusty pastels were a consistent trend. From AMIRI’s sky blue suiting to Isabel Marant and Issey Miyake’s palma violet purples, the message was clear that this season’s staples have moved away from monochrome mania and transformed into something more gentle.

If soft stuff is what you’re after, then look no further than SS21’s knitwear offering, where the likes of Gucci, Jil Sander and Isabel Marant (to name but a few) showed cosy creations replete with bright colours, vintage patterns and bold motifs to jazz up your wardrobe staples.

The Dark Arts

Nevertheless, fashion is a litmus test for our times, and thus it was impossible for SS21’s designers to avoid tapping into the underlying sense of global uncertainty that characterized 2020. Nodding to the collective consciousness with their inky colour palettes and the sober strictness of their designs, Matthew Williams (master of fashion-forward darkness at both Givenchy and his own label Alyx), Boramy Viguier and Rick Owens all delivered collections whose severity proved a reflection on the tougher times encountered by all.
