Since the brand’s inception in 1982, Stone Island has been a label renowned for its technical design and storied cultural history. With an exclusive camouflage capsule landing at Browns, we wanted to capture the brand’s past and future, celebrating the Stone Island legacy whilst taking it somewhere new. Tasked with interpreting the collection through the medium of dance, London-based choreographer Abdourahman Njie was challenged with bringing the pieces to life within their natural urban environment. Working in sync with his surroundings, Njie tells a tale of boldness and bravery through his use of movement and space.
 

“Dance is a body language essentially, and we all know how to do it,” he explains. “Through dancing I don’t have to speak. If I’m sad, or if I’ve gone through something which is quite heartfelt, I use that energy; I delve into it and try to characterize it.”
 
When using one’s body is a tool of expression, what we clothe it in becomes all the more important. “Anything I wear whilst I’m dancing, I tend to integrate the movement and the texture of what I’m feeling together,” he continues. “With Stone Island, what I was wearing went with my character in terms of how I was exploring myself, the patterns.”
 

With its combined qualities of durability and innovation, the Stone Island legacy is one that speaks to the creative mindset of the modern man, encouraging its wearer to challenge boundaries and break new ground. “I feel like Stone Island kind of has that inner-city edge to it, a dystopian-type feel,” he says. As for the space itself, “the architecture and the building really influenced my movement, and the song allowed me to go to a new place emotionally.”
 

For Njie, he says of his work: “Dance helps me change perspectives and narratives of people around me. Especially in the society we live in, there are so many stories to tell. You can make dance about love, you can make dance about pain, you can make it about happiness. Through that you’re influencing people; you’re influencing narratives.” Whether blending in or standing out, Stone Island’s camouflage pieces capture the brand’s unique blend of research, experimentation and function, offering the wearer a celebration of movement and adventure.
