Favouring the unfinished, the broken and the unloved, RUI finds beauty in imperfection. Founded in 2019 by designer Rui Zhou, the eponymous label explores the subtle relationship between skin and fabric by following the Japanese wabi-sabi principle. Finely knitted jerseys are twisted, draped and follow the body’s natural contours, while asymmetric, semi-sheer silhouettes are punctuated by holes and held together with tiny pearl beads. Soft and delicate second skin fabrications articulate the inexpressible and complicate conventional notions of love and emotion at RUI, revealing strength in fragility.
