Wish You Were Here... Alejandra Sabillon
Originally from Honduras, NYC DJ Alejandra Sabillon tells us about her first trip to London and her experience of the city’s infamous Notting Hill Carnival.

Where are you in these photos and what are you doing?
I’m in London. Mostly on vacation with a few gigs thrown in.
Who did you go with?
Three friends from New York - Nicole, Isioma, & Ladin.
Where are you from and where do you live now?
I’m from San Pedro Sula, Honduras but now I live in New York City.
How would you sum up what you do in a sentence?
I’m a DJ and an artist, mostly my life is music.
What was your first job?
Dog walker.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I always knew I wanted to be an artist or performer but I had no idea it was a real option until much later in life.
What does the word ‘holiday’ mean to you?
To mentally check out from everyday reality. I exist very much in the moment so if I’m going on vacation I’m fully buying into the escape. I definitely stop checking emails or keeping up to date on what is happening back home.

Most memorable moment of this trip?
Experiencing London carnival for the first time was really special. The Aba Shanti-I sound system was maybe my favorite. I also became obsessed with the vintage in London - spent a few days on that! The runners up are eating falafel and spending time in the parks.
Best thing you ate in London?
Falafel wrap and ginger beer.
Worst thing you ate in London?
I feel lucky but honestly I didn’t really have a bad meal!
How do you waste time, when your schedule is clear?
I go to the beach or lay in a park, nap, do absolutely nothing in my room.
Who do you most admire?
My grandma.
What’s the last dream that you remember having?
In London I dreamt I was browsing Instagram, it was a nightmare.
Describe yourself in three words...
Open, honest, ridiculous.

Fun fact about Alejandra?
I’ve seen a UFO!
Guilty pleasure/secret vice?
I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. I love watching TV and it's a real pleasure.
The funniest person you know?
My little brother.
One thing you can’t live without?
Music.
Best trip you ever took?
I’ve taken a few road trips across the USA, some on my own and some with friends. They have all been very meaningful for me. I can’t say they have been the best trips but they definitely have shaped a lot of who I am. For some reason they were filled with experiences that have stayed with me. Those trips hold very vivid memories in my mind.
Thing you miss most whilst you’re away?
My dog and this cutie I’ve been into.
Do you have a motto?
Mind your own business! And be nice!
