SS19 Menswear Trend Report

The spring/summer 2019 man is not afraid of embracing his feminine side and is continuing the "gender blender" movement through bold, daring and delicate pieces.

The colours are bright, the prints clash and suits are stepping away from the conventional. The 90s dad trend continues to make an appearance but is paving the way for the young ones in rebellious neon, tie-dye and oversized workwear.

Our menswear buying team have selected their top trends from the new season shows to give you a source of inspiration.

Last season we saw neon styles dominate womenswear, with a few subtle nods across menswear. This season has a new spin on the hi-vis vibes and brings a selection of psychedelic fluorescent pieces. These glow stick inspired looks play with a variety of unique fabrics and silhouettes across sportswear, suiting and accessories. Prep for all weather eventualities in PVC from Dries Van Noten, experiment with layering in Marcelo Burlon and go bold with print in Prada.

The suit is the core of classic menswear and this season, men’s tailoring has been reworked creating the suit 2.0. With oversized jackets, loose fit trousers and Miami Vice inspired colour palettes, the details are somewhat feminine, with pieces cut on the bias with the addition of delicate fabrication. They are forgoing shirts in favour of a bare chest and styling with sportswear and sandals. Keep it structured in GmbH, play with texture in Comme Des Garçons and emboss it with Balenciaga.

Keep everything safe and to hand with utilitarian, multi-functional pieces. Taking inspiration from items that are more frequently worn by tradesmen, this worker style is the new wave of streetwear. Using durable fabrics, hardware fixings and enough pockets to pack for a weekend away, these styles are built to endure the daily grind. GmbH, Heron Preston and Jacquemus are your go-to's. 

With the 90s continuing to dominate the last few seasons, it was only a matter of time before the bleach wash print synonymous with hippies and acid house ravers returned. The crafty colour mixing that once drip dried on washing lines has taken to the runway, getting its inspiration from the days of Saved by the Bell. Go grunge in Amiri, clash the prints in 1017 Alyx 9SM and replicate Tony Alva’s skater style in Vyner Articles.

Skin is in and its time to bare all in string vests, cut out layering and mesh inserts. Keep it subtle in Dior Homme*, show it all off in Raf Simons and take “distressed’ to the extreme in Rick Owens.

Do not be afraid of flower power and embrace a floral shirt. The dad trend has reached Geography teacher levels and this bold shirt choice is this seasons staple. AW18 brought us Guy Fieri flame shirts from Prada and this season is now taking a softer approach with feminine florals. Take props from the 70s in Jacquemus, say aloha in Liam Hodges and keep it minimal in Edward Crutchley.
