Conscious Delivery is a key step on our lifelong journey to finding new and innovative ways to enjoy fashion with a conscious approach. In April 2020 we introduced this initiative in support of our commitment to offset the carbon footprint made from every Browns order and return sent worldwide.
What Are Carbon Emissions And How Do We Measure Them?
Carbon emissions (i.e. excess CO2 gases) are the number one contributor to global warming, released into the atmosphere by human activities such as burning fossil fuels, farming and deforestation.
To combat these, we’re working with EcoAct who help us measure and calculate our carbon footprint in line with the internationally recognised Greenhouse Gas protocol.
How Are We Reducing Our Carbon Emissions?
Browns champions sustainably-minded designers through our curated Conscious Edit. Offering conscious packaging with every order, we use 100% recycled RPET dust bags and suit carriers, and biodegradable packing chips. Our offices are run on 100% renewable energy and we are working towards this in our boutiques.
As a business, our largest environmental impact comes from our logistics network. We are now offsetting this by investing in environmental projects independently verified to Gold Standard, American Carbon Registry, or the Verified Carbon Standard.
What Is Carbon Offsetting And Why Is It So Important?
Carbon offsetting is the investment in environmental projects that provide ‘carbon credits’. Each credit equates to one tonne of carbon that has not yet been emitted. Offsetting will help to balance out the emissions our shipments create day to day.
As part of our commitment, Browns is supporting the following carbon offsetting projects.
Planting And Protecting Forests
Forest conservation and reforestation play a vital role in the fight against climate change, so Browns is investing in two projects to support these initiatives. The Floresta de Portel project protects and preserves the biodiversity of forests within the Para Northwest state of Brazil; whilst America’s largest reforestation initiative in the Mississippi alluvial valley has one mission - to restore the 25 million acres of woodland that were once there.
Moving To Renewable Energy
In support of the shift towards a low carbon economy, these sustainable development projects help to fulfil Asia’s energy demand via renewable resources. In India, electricity is generated through wind turbines and supplied to the state grid; and China’s solar power project manages the construction and operation of a 100MW photovoltaic plant within the Guazhou country of the Gansu Province.
