Stargazing With Jockstrap For Gucci Cosmogonie
If you see a shooting star, what do you wish for? We wished for an exclusive curation of the Gucci Cosmogonie collection and it came true. This celestial edit of party and gifting season must-haves is nothing short of star worthy… so we invited a couple of rising stars who are soaring up in the musical stratosphere to explore the Gucci constellations with us before anyone else.
Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye - otherwise known as Jockstrap - are lauded as sonic shapeshifters, whose music far out-accelerates brain waves to leave you mystified in their wake. Their otherworldly sound is probably like nothing you’ve ever heard before - so who better to showcase Gucci’s out-of-this world celebration of the stars. We caught the harmonious UK duo before the US leg of their tour, taking a moment to pay homage to them and Gucci.
Hello Georgia and Taylor! What are each of your star signs?
T: Aquarius. I’m a Water sign but I can hardly swim!
G: Sagittarius sun, Leo moon and Libra rising.
Sagittarius and Aquarius are notoriously compatible as BFFs! Which makes complete sense here… When did your paths cross?
T: We both went to London's Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and met there in our first year in 2016. We had some classes together and eventually reached out when we both realised we wanted similar things. It was very exciting.
Tell us a little about your journey from meeting at university to creating Jockstrap.
G: Taylor was studying electronic composition and I was studying Jazz violin, and we met in a composition class. It wasn’t long until the rest of the people we’d met in Guildhall inspired us to make the sort of music we make today. I asked Taylor if he’d like to be in a band and produce my songs… and the rest is history!
Why the name Jockstrap?
T: The name needed to make us excited, and Jockstrap did just that - it sounded like a heavy metal band name. I think that during university, and the late teens / early twenties, there's a lot raging in humans around that time, and this name speaks to that.
Your sound is often described as cosmic, how would you describe it in your own words?
G: I like cosmic! There are lots of different words you could use - ethereal, hardcore, noisey, effeminate, anthemic, interesting, nice, surreal...
You’ve just launched your debut studio album, I Love You Jennifer B - could you tell us your favourite track from the album, and why that one is special to you?
T: My favourite track is Debra because it's the most dramatic in my opinion. I liked making it. Production wise, it's something that felt very natural and I didn't polish it too much.
We’re catching up in the midst of your album tour, just ahead of the US leg. What's been a highlight so far? And what are you most looking forward to?
G: The highlight has been selling out all the UK and EU shows! Primavera was a special show… and touring with Babymorocco was a highlight for us.
You see a shooting star - what do you wish for?
T: For all of my family to have nice clothes.
You’re hailed as sonic adventurers - please tell us about your experimental creative process to merge trippy electronic beats and elegant vocals that may not normally go together?
G: When we start with a track, we never know how it’s really going to turn out… A demo will sound widely different from the finished piece. Taylor is very driven to make music that sounds fresh - he is constantly reinventing the songs with his production in ways I (and many other people) could never have predicted or imagined.
Over the past four years you’ve amassed a loyal fan base… when you write a song, how do you want it to speak to them?
T: We never think about that, because how can you? If it speaks to them, that’s great. It’s got to speak to us and then (to be honest!) even then we don't even know if it does speak to us. You try to make that so.
We’re here together today for our love of Gucci - what do you love most about the iconic Italian house?
G: I love how they’ve made us look totally gorgeous today.
This collection is a celebration of the stars - who’s a star in your eyes?
T: Alex Turner. Anyone who beholds stardom.
Which is your favourite piece from the Gucci Cosmogonie collection?
G: The super high heels, they make me feel stunning.
What’s in the stars for Jockstrap?
T: We're excited for everything: the US tour; the Australia tour; playing music in the summer at festivals; and hearing new music from other people. Oh, and having a holiday!
