The Checklist: Coats Of The Season
As a certain character on a certain TV show once said, “winter is coming”. What he forgot to mention, however, was that without the right kind of coat, you’ll be ill-equipped to battle the entry into cooler climes. Luckily we’re bringing you our essential edit of coats to banish the chill and keep you looking sharp.
1. The Single Breasted Coat
A classic silhouette, the tailored edge of a single breasted makes this style a jack of all trades - the rag trade that is. Boxy silhouettes and clean lines mean that these coats work as well over a suit as they do pared back with jeans and a jumper. Try something simple and sharp from Studio Nicholson, or go for a cosier option with Isabel Marant’s emerald wool Kotajo checked coat.
2. The Padded Coat
Bigger is always better when it comes to the puffer jacket, with classic cocoon shapes providing the perfect marriage of winter warmth and contemporary cool. Keep it classic with Moncler and Canada Goose, or for a high fashion edge, look to Jacquemus' printed number, Gucci’s monogrammed style or Rick Owens’ oversized khaki flight jacket.
3. The Parka
For too long, parkas have been the unsung stalwart of the coat-wearing world. Not any more, with Bottega Veneta, Y-3, Our Legacy and more bringing us a high fashion take on the casual silhouette.
4. Trench Coats
A true original that never goes out of style, the trench coat is an investment piece that can be just as easily thrown over a casual look as dressed up for a more formal encounter. Try classic silhouettes from Tom Wood and Bottega Veneta, or go for a technical twist with Y-3’s bonded version.
