DAYDREAMING WITH SUKI WATERHOUSE
FOR GOLDEN GOOSE
Our biggest, wildest dreams can come true, as proven by multi-hyphenate singer-songwriter and actress Suki Waterhouse. Who has not only made a name for herself in the world of retro-pop, but also recently joined forces with Golden Goose on the fifth and final Dreamed By collection for their HAUS Of Dreamers talent incubator series - exclusively available at Browns.
Each artist was invited to co-dream a pair of footwear, a ready-to-wear piece, and a unique object linked to the artists’ Venetian experience. Taking cues from her own laid-back and glamorous signature style, Suki realised a three-piece collection inspired by her HAUS of Dreamers event performance; during which, images she took of Venice lined the entrance of the hotel as a glimpse into the iconic city through her lens.
In celebration of this dreamy launch - and the curation of exclusive looks styled by Suki herself from our own edit on display in Browns Brook Street - we indulged in some fantasising with the sartorial muse and model, discussing making dreams a reality and much more…
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I wish I had some obscure, fun answer but honestly, I always wanted to be a musician. That’s never changed. You can ask anyone in my family and they would say the same thing. It’s always been the dream!
What would you most like to change about the world?
This is a big question, and there are so many things we could change to make the world a better place. But one thing in particular - I would love it if the world was less noisy and busy. Everyone moves at such a fast pace nowadays, getting caught up in the hustle and bustle, that I think it would do everyone some good to just take a beat.
If you could be anywhere right now, where would you be?
I would love to be back in the studio, finalising my second album. Pretty much anytime I’m not there, I want to be. The studio is basically my second home.
What would be your perfect day?
Waking up early and naturally, getting outside and walking through the park. Then buying a ton of magazines and newspapers and sitting in my favourite cafe watching people go past. It’s having the time to write a little and just space to think - ideally I’d be without my phone. Then it would be meeting with a good friend, having a catch up and then going to the cinema, the theatre or an exhibition.
What's one thing on your bucket list?
To go to Japan! I’ve never been and I’m absolutely dying to go. I’d love to go and spend New Year’s there, I’ve heard that’s a brilliant time. I know there’s so much to experience and it makes me so excited to think about one day getting to visit.
What’s your idea of happiness?
Happiness is being able to understand why you’re sad sometimes and knowing that it will pass. It’s about not treating happiness or sadness as such different things, more just a feeling that comes and goes. I think it’s also about being present and occupying your reality. When I’m able to feel my life and the connections between the people I love are strong is when I’m happiest.
If you could ask anyone a question, who would you ask, and what?
I would ask God why he put me through all that in my twenties. I’m not angry, I just want to know.
Why is creativity important to you?
I think it makes thought important, and it’s a place where we value introspection and it encourages finding your own perspective and fighting the world to keep it, which is a beautiful thing.
What is style to you? And how did this influence the Golden Goose HAUS Of Dreamers capsule?
Style is self expression - it should be creative and fun, an opportunity to show the world who you want to be. So the capsule is a little bit of me! I pulled inspiration from all over and the Golden Goose team has been so supportive and collaborative. The sleeveless white top with the embroidered crystals is probably my favourite piece. And also the Western boots!
Is there something that you learned about yourself during the process of creating your ‘Dreamed By Suki’ edit?
I’ve never had the opportunity to collaborate with a brand on my own collection. And through the process, I learned it’s something I really enjoy. I love getting to push myself creatively and feel so lucky to have worked with some amazing people to create something special together.
If you could live in any era, what would it be?
The height of pirate times! Think ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’.
Who or what inspires you?
My friends and family, especially my sisters. I love seeing them come into their own and become confident, fully-formed adults. They make me want to be better at everything I do.
Which three albums would you take on a desert island?
Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
Greatest Hits - Al Green
Live at the Second Fret - Joni Mitchell
Do you have any unusual habits or rituals?
Probably ordering a baked potato and cheese and taking it into the bath!
If you had a superpower, what would it be?
Looking at a pile of clothes and having them magically tidied. Would save so much time and I can’t be the only one who hates putting the laundry away.
What's an event you wish you'd witnessed?
The beginning of time!
What do you need more time for?
Writing. It’s a never-ending process, and I never find enough time to do it.
What do you wish you had known at the start of your career?
That I’d ultimately find my way, and that every tiny baby step is the most valuable. I wish I hadn’t been so hard on myself as a young person starting out, but also I’m so grateful for every closed door and disappointment.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Let go. When you really accept that you can’t control much in this life, you are freed to focus on what’s important.
What are your hopes and dreams for the future?
I’m just taking life day by day right now. I feel fortunate to be so busy but also really value the quiet times too, I think life moves in seasons and the next one is coming! To keep that balance moving forward is all I could ask for.
Throughout the month of September 2023, the ground floor of Browns Brook Street was an immersive homage to Golden Goose’s HAUS of Dreamers, showcasing their entire Dreamed By series of limited-edition collaborative collections - from Fabio Novembre and Quannah Chasinghorse to Dr. Woo, SUNMI and Suki Waterhouse. As well as a series of dreamy looks styled by Suki herself from our own edit. We launched this in-store homage during London Fashion Week, with a party hosted by our CEO Elizabeth von der Goltz, Golden Goose and Suki herself.
