THE SHOOT
SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL
From the everyday to extraordinary, wear-on-repeat wardrobe essentials get a head-turning twist for fall/winter 2023. Model Mika Santos wears the new season's soft power pieces to buy now and wear forever.
The New Classics
Buy them now, wear them forever. These are the pieces made for long-term love, the ones with enough sartorial heft to make them genuinely desirable but thoughtfully designed to make them really useful. Whether you’re choosing a major investment piece like a long leather coat or shearling-lined bomber (thank you, Acne Studios) or elevated essentials like the perfect white shirt or pair of jeans, go with your gut and choose the clothes that spark joy and tie all your looks together.
Effortless Outerwear
Find the perfect, big-hitting coat and what you wear underneath becomes almost irrelevant, especially when the coats in question look quite as good as AW23’s offering. The best are softly structured in luxe fabrics, from the elegant ladylike pleats and full sleeves of Alexander McQueen’s belted trench to the crisp lines and sharp attitude of Ferragamo’s masculine overcoat. For guaranteed drama look to sweeping, ankle-grazing silhouettes with timeless appeal or reach for the ultimate trophy piece, a shearling-lined leather piece (we’re looking at you Chloé) that’s worth getting out of bed for on even the coldest and darkest mornings.
Dare-To-Be-Different Dresses
Ready to inspire you to up your sartorial game, AW23's dress offering is awash with standout pieces whether you’re looking for something slinky that you can layer with cosy knits or a gown that will really make an impact after dark. Vivienne Westwood’s seductively draped dress balances a just-clingy-enough silhouette with a quietly serious shade of grey and is ripe for pairing with a pair of knee boots or kitten heels and some modernist jewellery. Simone Rocha’s ethereal offering, meanwhile, is a cloud of white and silver and the perfect foil for winter’s chunky knits, heavy overcoats and long, grey days.
Knitwear 2.0
Planning to spend the next few months cocooned in nothing but knitwear? You’re in luck because, across the board, designers have given their most soft and tactile pieces a serious injection of must-have style. Go all-in with a knit dress – GANNI’s slouchy blue number is a throw-on-and-go masterpiece made for cold weather dressing – or swathe yourself in cosy separates, from oversized, super chunky sweaters and XXL cardigans to the less practically-minded polo knits and barely-there fine gauge creations.
Luxe Layering
Why settle for wearing two items when you can make it six? Such is the joy of autumnal dressing and, this season, fashion has embraced its endless layering possibilities with luxe pieces made to be mixed, matched and piled on top of each other. Look for long, lean, beautifully draped pieces like Lanvin’s slit tunic dress that can be styled over skirts and trousers alike with effortless ease, or opt for playfully simple separates that can be added and removed depending on the setting. Don’t forget to throw something show-stopping into the mix on occasion, either: Alaïa’s cocoon coat will elevate every piece you pair it with, no matter how many of them there are.
