SS20 Menswear Trend Report
The SS20 man is taking style cues from his female counterparts, showing some skin, raising hemlines and embracing the twinset. The runways introduced us to sheer shirts, mix ‘n’ match prints and enough coordinates to point you in the right direction.
Pink dominated, with a variety of blush shades in full drench looks, and tailoring was a consistent theme, mixing slim fit and oversized silhouettes.

Looking at the future through a rose tint, this season reworked the definition of masculinity with an influx of pink in every hue. The ‘associate’ colour of femininity was in abundance, taking the lead across tailoring, jersey separates and accessories. Step away from tonal sportswear in 1017 ALYX 9SM, introduce pastels from Balmain and rebel against your trusty dark suit with Ann Demeulemeester’s unexpected colour addition.
A (very) visible theme that ran across both men’s and women’s this season was the addition of all-but-invisible pieces within full looks. Organza, tulle and mesh graced the menswear runways, layered over and under, to reveal bare chests through translucent elements. Dare to bare it all with Dior Homme and Versace’s see-through tops or opt for some Strictly Ballroom flair in Dolce & Gabbana’s sheer shirts.
With prints maintaining micro trends in their own right every season, the new updates are the key pieces to add some colour to our everyday wardrobe. SS20 introduced clashing patterns, surreal motifs and feminine florals. Channel your cyberpunk alter ego in Liam Hodges, add some patchwork saturation in Dries Van Noten and give a modern-day dandy appeal in Edward Crutchley.
Finding your perfect match can lead to some unwanted pairings but SS20 took out the effort of searching with the reintroduction of the co-ord 2.0. An instant outfit, these matching combos were reimagined across denim, tailoring and loungewear. Experiment with printed denim duos from Casablanca, keep it uniform in Prada’s utilitarian sets and recycle an old classic in Ahluwalia Studio
Underwear as outerwear has finally reached the guys, with the appearance of boxer shorts on the runway for SS20. Above-the-knee shorts have been a rising trend in the high summer months but things are getting a little more intimate with higher hemlines and a mix of silk and shirting fabrics. Be daring in tropical prints from Dries Van Noten, lose the trousers in Fendi and have a ‘knees-up’ in Versace.
