Eye-popping colour, statement prints and effortless silhouettes: it’s impossible to imagine being anything but upbeat in Mira Mikati’s joy-generating collection. The designer opens the doors to her Chelsea townhouse and we talk Beyoncé, boxing and bag obsessions…

“I love Craig Redman’s Darcel Disappoints prints. They’re playful, colorful and different. I commissioned him to draw my kids and husband. Those are my favourites.”

“Colour makes me happy! I have always loved colours since I was very young and have a particular weakness for yellow.”

How would you describe your style?

Effortless, free spirited, colourful, fun and different.

What are your wardrobe go-to’s?

Denim, basic tops, colourful slip-ons, Céline sliders and Gucci slippers. I like balance so I tend to wear simple staples as a base so I can play around and have fun with the pieces that I love – beaded necklaces and bracelets from my travels, a fun knit, a cool jacket and a poncho or a well cut coat.

“I love Takashi Murakami. His pieces always evoke happiness and positivity so I love being surrounded by them.”

Do you have any guilty-pleasures?

I have a weakness for bags… I am obsessed! I buy a lot of shoes but often end up getting the same shoe in different colors and stay faithful to it. I also have a big weakness for beaded and weaved bracelets and necklaces. My passion is to hunt for some every time I travel. That is my biggest obsession.

Heels or flats?

Flats during the day and heels at night. Flats suits my lifestyle much more but when my heart beats for a heel, it beats very fast!

What do you wear when you travel?

Jeans, some lace-ups, a soft knit and a light blanket scarf to cover myself when the plane is freezing cold! I try to limit necklaces and accessories to avoid beeping at every security station, but find it quite challenging!

“My mantra in life? Don't worry, be happy!"

What is an ‘average’ day for you?

I wake up at 6:30am, go to the gym at 7:30am, buy a healthy breakfast on my way back, forget myself in the shower, walk to the office, have dinner with my kids at 7:00pm, spend time with them and I love to sleep early... On the weekend I like to walk around, enjoy my kids and go out at night.

How do you ensure a work/life balance?

I work a lot during the week and try and disconnect completely on weekends and spend as much time as I can with my little family. Boxing is a great way for me to relax too; I take out all my stress on the poor bag!

“I love having fun and don't understand why so many people take life too seriously.”

What are the things you like to do in London?

I have a weakness for Notting Hill. I go to Tin Sheds for the avocados on toast for breakfast, the first floor of the Electric for lunch and Scotts for a yummy dinner.

What do you love most about London?

Everything!!! I just love this city: it's energy and it’s vibrancy. There is always so much going on; always an amazing art exhibition somewhere, or a great restaurant to go to. It's the perfect city, despite the weather – but I try and ignore that. It's also in the middle of the world, which makes me feel that I could go anywhere.

Any tips for Chelsea?

C press for juices, The Good Life for lunch, Raw Press for healthy deserts, Heartcore for Pilates, Kobox for boxing, Harry's for nail art and Wild At Heart for flowers.

How do you come up with your designs?

I always come up with a story… My SS16 collection was about a fantasy road trip that I actually ended up doing! It's all about a girl that drives from San Francisco to Arizona, Santa Fe... all the way to NYC.  She loses her suitcase and buys bits and pieces in every country she stops. Cactuses, flowers, rainbows, Native American symbols...

How does it feel to have the likes of Beyonce and Rihanna wear your pieces?

It feels like a dream. I was interviewing a candidate at work when someone sent me a picture of Rihanna wearing my collection and I was all of a sudden screaming and jumping in the middle of the interview! As for Beyoncé, I believe my screams and tears must have reached the US.
