Oliver Goldsmith has been a family-run eyewear business for over 80 years, first founded as a spectacle maker in 1926 by P. Oliver Goldsmith. As sunglasses gained popularity during the mid-1950’s Oliver Goldsmith was the first to see sunglasses as fashion accessories instead of simply practical eye protection. He began to design sunglasses for winter as well as summer, and the unique shapes began to attract the attention of fashion designers who asked for new designs that would complement their clothing collections. A pair of Oliver Goldsmith’s became the defining look of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s and can be seen worn by everyone from Michael Caine in ‘Get Carter’ to Audrey Hepburn in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’. The label was also favoured by Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Jackie O among others. After closing for twenty years the label was re-launched in 2005 by Claire Goldsmith, great-granddaughter of the original founder who aims to continue the heritage of the company while making the brand very much contemporary.
